According to the Endocrine Society, bio-identical hormones are “compounds that have exactly the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are produced in the human body”. In compounding pharmacies, it is a preparation that contains progesterone or one or more of three estrogens (estradiol and estriol).

In the process of a bio-identical hormone, a clinician prescribes a woman a mixture of hormones “to correct any deficiencies” and balance the hormones. This mixture is derived from natural sources and can also include other hormones like adrenal hormones, testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). This is usually used to women who are undergoing menopause and help protect against weak bones, dementia, heart disease; and premature death, meaning it can save lives!
